The Pros and Cons of Social Media

Social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X have become an integral part of everyday life. They shape how people communicate, access information, and express themselves. While social media offers opportunities for connection, learning, and creativity, it also raises concerns about mental health, privacy, misinformation, and addiction. As social media continues to influence individuals and society, an important question emerges: Is social media a powerful tool for empowerment, or does it create more harm than benefit?
Your presentation can be structured from various perspectives, for instance:

  1. Personal experience with social media use
  2. Benefits of social media (e.g., communication, English learning, networking)
  3. Negative impacts (e.g., addiction, cyberbullying, mental health issues)
  4. Influence on relationships and daily life
  5. Role of social media in education or society
  6. Future development and responsible use of social media

由語發中心網頁或掃描 QR code 至線上表單報名，並上傳 10-12 頁簡報。初賽以繳交之簡報評選，通過組別進入決賽。
Go to CDLTR website or scan the QR Code to fill in an online registration. Submit 10-12 PPT slides to the link. The judges will do a first round evaluation by examining the PowerPoint slides. Students with better performance will be selected for the final round.

 比賽規定｜Regulations

  1. 本競賽分為「國際組」與「國內組」。國際組參賽資格限為修習學術英語文(EAP)或共通專業英語文 (ESP) 之國際生，以及大一學術英語文 AU1、AU2 級別與大二共通專業英語文高級班學生；凡多益 600 分以上者建議報名此組別；國內組限為大一學術英語文 AU3-AU4 級別，以及大二共通專業英語文中級班學生。
    The contest is divided into the International Group and the Local Group.
    - Eligibility for the International Group: international students taking EAP or ESP courses, and students in EAP AU1/AU2 level or ESP Advanced level classes; students with a TOEIC score above 600 should join this Group.
    - Eligibility for the Local Group: students in EAP AU3/AU4 level or ESP Intermediate level classes
    * 請依照各組成員裡英語文程度最高者報名，若填寫不實將依棄權辦理。
    Please register based on the team member with the highest level of English proficiency. Any misrepresentation of information will result in disqualification.
     
  2. 欲參加請於 4/17 (五)下午 5 點前填寫線上報名表，並繳交比賽 PPT 簡報檔。
    Please sign up via an online registration form and upload the PowerPoint slides file by Friday, April 17, 5:00 pm.
  3. 初賽通過者將於 4/30 (四)公告於語發中心網站。
    Entry list for the final round will be announced on CDLTR website on Thursday, April 30.
  4. 決賽日期為 5/6 (三)，將分組上台進行口頭簡報，須抽換簡報 PPT 的組別，請於 5/5 (二) 12:00 前抽換。
    Final round is on Wednesday, May 6. Each group should do an oral presentation on stage. If participants want to update their PowerPoint slides, please submit the new ones to CDLTR before Tuesday, May 5, 12:00 pm.
  5. 本比賽為 EFL 學生比賽，如隊員中包含母語為英文之參賽者，則不符合參賽資格，無法參加比賽。
    Since this is an EFL contest and the focus is to motivate students who live in countries where English is a foreign language, if students come from a country where one of the official languages is English (or the participant has a passport from a country where English is an official language), they cannot participate in the contest.

 決賽方式｜Final Round Regulations

  1. 決審參賽隊伍於安排時間進行現場英文簡報，每組簡報時間以 6-8 分鐘為限。時間超過或未達要求，將扣分。進行簡報時，大會將於第五分半鐘時響一次鈴，第七分鐘時響兩次鈴，第八分鐘時響三次鈴提醒。鈴響三次表示時間已到，主持人將要求隊伍停止報告並下台。
    Each team will give a presentation at the scheduled time and each presentation should last 6 to 8 minutes. Points will be deducted if the presentation does not reach/end within the time limit. The bell will ring once when the presentation reaches the 5 and a half minute mark, twice at the 7th minute mark, and three times at the 8th minute. After the 8th minute mark, the host will end the presentation and ask presenters to leave the stage.
  2. 本競賽為團體競賽，每隊限 2-7 人參加 (不接受個人參賽)，隊員不須全部上台簡報。
    This is a team contest. Students must form a team of 2 to 7 members. Not all team members are required to present on stage.
  3. 以 PowerPoint 投影片輔助進行簡報。投影片必須由參賽者自行製作，並確認簡報中引用的圖片及文章來源，避免版權爭議。建議參賽者自備提示小卡，不建議直接宣讀 PowerPoint 檔內容。
    It is required to use the PowerPoint to facilitate the presentation. Slides must be created by participants, ideally their original work; please list the references for photos and information shown in slides to avoid copyright infringement. We encourage participants to glance at notes occasionally instead of reading content in slides.

 獎勵辦法｜Prizes

分國際組和國內組兩組評選，下列獎項每組各取前三名及佳作一名：
The contest contains two groups – International Group & Local Group. Each group will have 1st, 2nd, 3rd prize and 1 Outstanding Awards.

第一名: 獎金 5,000 元、各參賽者獎狀乙只。
First Prize: NT$ 5,000 & certificates.

第二名: 獎金 3,000 元、各參賽者獎狀乙只。
Second Prize: NT$ 3,000 & certificates.

第三名: 獎金 1,000 元、各參賽者獎狀乙只。
Third Prize: NT$ 1,000 & certificates.

佳   作: 獎金 500 元、各參賽者獎狀乙只。
Outstanding Award: NT$500 & certificates
